15 Dec 2011 : Majuli - India Rhinos in the mist13 photos attached
Cherrapunjee left us with great memories, aching legs and a bit of a dilemma about how to get to our next destination, Kaziranga. There seemed to be absolutely no easy public transport options and so we ended up hiring a taxi which after an eight hour journey, dropped us off at the Bon Habi Resort in Kaziranga. We weren’t expecting much from the hotel as previous experience has taught us that hotels in National Parks in India are either really grim or incredibly expensive. ...More...

3 Dec 2011 : Meghalaya - India Cherrapunjee - the rainiest place on earth!12 photos attached
Our big holiday of 2011 took quite a while to come together, we had many rethinks to get the perfect route, along with many a plane and train rebooking to keep the flights to a minimum. Shillong (capital of the state of Meghalaya) was our first destination after a flight to Guwahati and a long taxi ride. ...More...

12 Sep 2011 : Bombay Chowpatties - India Ganpati Bappa Morya!22 photos attached
By far the festival we enjoyed the most last year was Ganpati Chaturthi - a 10 day celebration of Lord Ganeshs' birthday. It is also the most important festival of the year here in Mumbai because Ganesh is every Mumbaikers favourite God. Before embarking upon any sort of venture or trip devotees (and not just Hindus I must add!) will say prayers and give offerings to Ganesh and in return he will offer his blessings. ...More...

4 Jun 2011 : Srinagar, Kashmir - India Strangers in Paradise35 photos attached
We arrived at Butts Clermont Houseboats to warm hugs from Mr Gulam Butt, the gentlemanly proprietor who became more like family than our host by the end of our 7 night stay, and a pot of piping hot Kashmiri tea delivered by the smiling Ramzan. ...More...

4 Apr 2011 : Goa - India 10 years on3 photos attached
Today Yearaway.com is officially 10 years old! It was 10 years ago, on April 4th 2001, that we set off on our extended honeymoon and what a honeymoon it turned out to be. In those 10 years we have seen some amazing places, stayed at more special hotels than I ever expected to stay at in a lifetime, eaten tonnes of great food and enjoyed a myriad of new experiences. ...More...

21 Nov 2010 : Karnataka... or maybe Rajasthan - India Another week... another holiday30 photos attached
We had been planning this three-week trip on and off for a couple of months. This year's big vacation - flights booked, hotels identified, restaurant reviews read and tourist sites investigated. We were off to Karnataka! But then the night before we were due to fly we changed our minds and the next morning we flew north, instead of South, and found ourselves instead in Rajasthan. We didn't have much of a plan, nothing booked, just a pair of light rucksacks on our backs. ...More...

5 Nov 2010 : Dalhouse, McLeodganj and Amritsar - India The Festival of Lights18 photos attached
The week started with a new car puja – a little ceremony involving breaking a coconut, drawing a swastika on our car in red powder called kumkum and saying a few prayers to bless all our journeys to come. We had just bought a Nano – the world’s cheapest car and a wonder of modern engineering. ...More...

27 Sep 2010 : Mumbai - India Ganesh Festivities8 photos attached
The festival season is upon us. A weekend earlier in the month saw the collision of four festivals - Eid, Ganesh Ganpati, The Feast of Mother Mary and Paryushan. This meant that just about every Hindu, Muslim, Catholic and Jain in the city was busy with the business of merry-making. This, mixed in with the swift parading of the Commonwealth Games Torch through the city (let's not talk about the Games just now!) bought an incredibly chaotic but also very peaceful closure to the monsoon season. Ganesh Ganpati presented the most interest for us. ...More...

20 Apr 2010 : Mumbai - India The Bombay Cacophony7 photos attached
After numerous requests and a first month of craziness in this new city we are calling home for a while, we have decided to resurrect yearaway. But where to begin…? What better place than here and now at the Sea View Hotel Bar on Juhu Chowpatty watching the sun set over the Arabian sea and the teeming weekend hoards on the beach below. ...More...
